When it comes to paper sizes, the United States follows a specific standard known as ANSI paper sizes. While ISO paper sizes, like A4, dominate globally, US paper sizes are widely used in North America for anything printer paper-related. In particular, the ANSI system is used for technical drawings, engineering plans, and other professional documents. In this article, we’ll tell you everything you need to know about ANSI.

Definition: ANSI paper size

In the 1990s, the American National Standards Institute adopted the ANSI paper sizes as a standard that differs from the international ISO (International Organization for Standardization) standard used in many other parts of the world. However, similar to ISO 216, two sheets make up the dimensions of the next larger sheets. ANSI consists of sizes labelled from A through E, with each of the five sizes corresponding to a different set of dimensions that serve various purposes:

  • ANSI A (8.5 × 11 in or 216 × 279 mm)
  • ANSI B (11 × 17 in or 279 × 432 mm)
  • ANSI C (17 × 22 in or 432 × 559 mm)
  • ANSI D (22 × 34 in or 559 × 864 mm)
  • ANSI E (34 × 44 in or 864 × 1118 mm)

In this section, we’ll explain each ANSI paper size.

ANSI A (8.5 × 11 in) is the most commonly used paper size in the US, which is also known as “Letter.” Letter size is equivalent to A4 paper dimensions (8.3 × 11.7 in) and is used for:

ANSI B (11 × 17 in) is also known as “Tabloid” and is often used for printing larger documents, such as:

ANSI C (17 × 22 in) allows for precise details due to its size and is used for:

  • Maps
  • Engineering documents
  • Architectural documents

ANSI D (22 × 34 in) is commonly used for larger engineering and architectural drawings found in construction and design projects. Examples are:

ANSI E (34 × 44 in) is primarily used for very large technical drawings, such as construction plans or oversized artwork. This paper size is ideal for detailed designs that need a lot of space to communicate all the necessary information.
